Rhode Island healthcare advertising, telehealth and privacy rules

Rhode Island in brief. Rhode Island is in PSYPACT, so a psychologist licensed here can apply to treat clients by telehealth in the other PSYPACT states. Rhode Island has enacted the Counseling Compact, which wasn't live here yet when we checked. The Rhode Island Data Transparency and Privacy Protection Act treats health data as sensitive. Below: what Rhode Island's licensing boards allow in advertising, with links to the official text.

Rhode Island licensing boards’ advertising rules

Ads, websites and directory profiles all count as advertising to a licensing board. These are the Rhode Island rules we check copy against, with links to the official text. Boards update their rules, so read the current version before you rely on a summary.

Rhode Island Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline

  • Unprofessional conduct for physicians includes all advertising of medical business that is intended to deceive the public or has a tendency to do so. (R.I. Gen. Laws 5-37-5.1(2))

Rhode Island Board of Mental Health Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists

  • Except as the chapter provides, a person not licensed under Rhode Island's counselor and marriage and family therapist law may not advertise that they perform marriage and family therapy or mental health counseling services. (R.I. Gen. Laws 5-63.2-11(1))

Rhode Island Board of Social Work Examiners

  • After a hearing, the board may recommend refusing, suspending, revoking or restricting a social work license if it finds the licensee has engaged in false or misleading advertising. (R.I. Gen. Laws 5-39.1-10(11))

Telehealth across Rhode Island's borders

Rhode Island is a PSYPACT state. A psychologist whose home license is in Rhode Island can apply for PSYPACT's telepsychology authorization and then see clients by telehealth in the other PSYPACT states, so ads can reach clients there too.

Rhode Island has enacted the Counseling Compact, but it wasn't live here yet when we checked. Once it is, a licensed professional counselor based here can apply for privileges to practice in other member states instead of a separate license in each.

It has also enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact, which isn't issuing multistate licenses yet; the compact's commission expects its licensing system in 2027.

For physicians, psychiatrists included, Rhode Island has passed the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, but the compact lists its implementation as still in process or delayed, so for now a doctor needs a Rhode Island license through the usual route.

Telehealth ads should only reach places where the clinician can legally treat: see PSYPACT and Counseling Compact states.

Practices near a state line often see clients from next door. Connecticut and Massachusetts each have their own page.

Health data, tracking and Rhode Island law

The Rhode Island Data Transparency and Privacy Protection Act, in effect since January 2026, treats health information as sensitive data. A business needs the person's opt-in consent before processing it. Most small practices fall below its size thresholds, but the ad platforms and data companies that receive website data usually don't, which is one more reason health information shouldn't reach them.

This is not legal advice.

What patients search for in Rhode Island

Searches a month that name a Rhode Island city, with the average cost per click, from Ahrefs (checked between 30 September and 5 October 2026). A dash means too few to measure; “near me” searches aren't counted. The Statewide row is searches that name the state.

Newport30 $3.5010–––––

Of the cities measured, Providence gets the most of these searches. Its biggest single search, “gastroenterologist providence”, gets about 250 a month. To turn a cost per click into a cost per booked patient, put your own numbers into the patient acquisition cost calculator.

Across the searches measured here, Rhode Island patients look most for therapists (about 580 a month), then gastroenterologists (500). Providence alone accounts for 33% of them. A click on a therapist search here costs about $3.54 on average, below the $4.00 median across the 306 therapist searches measured on our state pages.
