Michigan healthcare advertising, telehealth and privacy rules

Michigan in brief. Michigan is in PSYPACT, so a psychologist licensed here can apply to treat clients by telehealth in the other PSYPACT states. Michigan has not enacted the Counseling Compact. Michigan has no comprehensive privacy law or consumer health data law in effect. Below: what Michigan's licensing boards allow in advertising, with links to the official text.

Michigan licensing boards’ advertising rules

Ads, websites and directory profiles all count as advertising to a licensing board. These are the Michigan rules we check copy against, with links to the official text. Boards update their rules, so read the current version before you rely on a summary.

Every Michigan health care practitioner

  • False or misleading advertising by a health professional licensed or registered under the Public Health Code is an unethical business practice and a ground for disciplinary action. (MCL 333.16221(d)(i))

Michigan Board of Marriage and Family Therapy

  • Unless exempt under MCL 333.16905(3), only licensed marriage and family therapists may advertise that they offer marriage and family therapy or marriage or family counseling or guidance services. (MCL 333.16903(2))
  • When representing their services to the public, licensed marriage and family therapists must use only the title "licensed marriage and family therapist" or "licensed marriage counselor" or the abbreviation "l.m.f.t." (MCL 333.16903(1))

Telehealth across Michigan's borders

Michigan is a PSYPACT state. A psychologist whose home license is in Michigan can apply for PSYPACT's telepsychology authorization and then see clients by telehealth in the other PSYPACT states, so ads can reach clients there too.

Michigan has not enacted the Counseling Compact, so a counselor licensed here needs a separate license for each other state.

For physicians, psychiatrists included, Michigan is in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, which speeds up getting a license in other member states but doesn't replace it.

Telehealth ads should only reach places where the clinician can legally treat: see PSYPACT and Counseling Compact states.

Practices near a state line often see clients from next door. Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin each have their own page.

Health data, tracking and Michigan law

Michigan has no comprehensive consumer privacy law or consumer health data law in effect as of 30 September 2026. Federal rules and a practice's own HIPAA duties still apply.

This is not legal advice.

Across the searches measured here, Michigan patients look most for therapists (about 1,090 a month), then psychiatrists (620). Grand Rapids alone accounts for 27% of them. A click on a therapist search here costs about $4.22 on average, close to the $4.00 median across the 306 therapist searches measured on our state pages.
